38 years of rock music under the sign of the cow in Stemwede-Haldem, Ilweder Wäldchen
Year after year, the "Umsonst & Draussen Urgestein" under the sign of the cow invites everyone to gather. For the 38th time, the Stemwede Open Air Festival will take place in Stemwede-Haldem in the north of NRW. Founded in 1976, this year on August 15th and 16th, the 38th edition of the Stemwede Open Air, one of the largest German "Umsonst & Draußen Festivals", will be celebrated. Thus, in 2014, the success story of the festival continues, and trusting in a solid lineup, whole armies are expected to make their way to Stemwede.
In addition to the music on two stages, the lively activities on the festival grounds – between sales stalls, the DJ tent, the chill-out area "Sonnensystem", street performances, and general partying – have developed into a main attraction of the event with its vibrant festival culture. The whole thing is also regularly well-sounded, as the organizers have proven their taste and foresight in the past. Bands like Sportfreunde Stiller, Beatsteaks, Donots, La Vela Puerca, Slime, or Die Happy have graced the stage in Stemwede.
Preparations for this year's festival are already in full swing, and the booking department has done its homework. In addition to a colorful mix of indie, ska, rock, punk, and everything else that pleases, there are again some highlights on stage this year. Confirmed are "Zebrahead", a punk-inspired rock formation from La Habra, California, "I-Fire" bringing reggae sounds to Stemwede, "Keule", who deliver a crazy mix of music, party, and brilliant wordplay, "Susanne Blech" storming the festival stages with their electro-pop, and the Boston punk legend "Street Dogs". Additionally, there will be a high-profile newcomer program on the meadow stage. "Big Balls Cowgirl" from Meppen play big 'n' heavy rock 'n' roll and are a real hit live. "Home to Paris" from Münster have fished wildly in the waters of brass and pop music, pulling ashore a dance monster, and "Crystal Pasture" invite you to a fat funk, polka, and ska party with their village music.
The Californian pop punkers "Zebrahead" are now known worldwide for their explosive and entertaining live shows. At the gigs of the guys from Orange County, no eye stays dry! In Orange County, the question of a curfew doesn't even arise. Zebrahead knows how to create a party atmosphere – and that around the clock. Since their rebirth, the guys have experienced every high and low, sold over 1.5 million albums to date, survived several label changes, received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance alongside Motörhead, and toured non-stop.
Fire is a key word in reggae. Even though it is often misunderstood and misinterpreted, the fire must burn. In the performance, the riddims, the lyrics. And "I-Fire" leaves no doubt about that. When this band plays, it's Fire Day!
"Keule" is a Neue Deutsche Welle band that transforms any kind of box thinking into splinters and sends the hearts and minds of the music community thirsty for innovation into rehab. Highlights of a Keule show include songs like the inevitable "Ich hab dich gestern Nacht auf Youporn gesehen" (more than 1.8 million views on YouTube!).
Anyone who suspects a lonely musician behind "Susanne Blech" is in for a surprise: behind the name is a six-member electropop band from the Rhine-Ruhr area. They produce electronic music that embodies both unconditional pop and exclusivity, and above all, linguistic elegance.
After singer Mike McColgan left the folk-punk band "Dropkick Murphys" in 1998, he founded the band "Street Dogs" four years later. Over the years, they have made a name for themselves in the punk scene with their songs about friendship and solidarity. A bit of hardcore, a bit of something to sway to, and roaring guitars - what more could you want?
With their unique mix from Pantera to Volbeat, country to rock 'n' roll, and timeless ballads, the Meppen quartet "Big Balls Cowgirl" immediately captivates every taste-savvy rocker and metalhead.
"Home to Paris" manages to combine crunchy indie with bouncy ska, but does not shy away from opening up further boxes with Balkan and funk. Live, one experiences a true sound fireworks, to which no dancing leg can resist for long.
Up front, the polka rumbles in 2/4 time, behind it dances towards ska, and in between, it crashes, rocks, and rolls. Soft waltz sounds can be heard, indie and folk send their regards, and atmospheric sounds are also indulged in by "Crystal Pasture" here and there. Always danceable and highly contagious in their joy of playing.
