Lavinia Meijer impressively interprets Ludovico Einaudi on the harp
After her great success in the Dutch pop charts, now also with a new album & concert in Germany
The Dutch star harpist Lavinia Meijer is constantly searching for new and extraordinary repertoire for her instrument. After her collaboration with the American minimalist Philip Glass, a meeting with the multiple award-winning Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi inspired her to create her new album. She has arranged eleven touching piano pieces by him for the harp. In the lead-up to the recordings, Einaudi provided her with valuable tips. "He particularly emphasized the spontaneity and flow of his music," Meijer recalls. This natural "flow," this fluidity, has been magically realized by the exceptional harpist in her Einaudi album "Passaggio," with which she also makes her debut at Sony Classical.
The selected pieces include the romantic "Le Onde" from Einaudi's first piano album, with which he established his worldwide reputation as a composer in 1996. His minimalist, gentle sound language is also found in "Una Mattina," which became famous as the soundtrack to the film "The Intouchables," as well as in "Nuvole Bianche." In the title track "Passaggio," there are even echoes of folk music. "These are all works that evoke something personal in me," says Lavinia Meijer. "And I feel like a singer/songwriter telling a personal story, where the audience shares in my life."
How sensitively and enchantingly Meijer brings her harp strings to life has impressed Einaudi more than just a little. "She is a sensitive and intelligent artist," says the Italian about the Dutch musician, whose roots lie in Korea. At the age of nine, Lavinia Meijer began playing the harp. Today, she is among the greats on this instrument and has performed concerts in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Wiener Musikverein.
The award-winning musician has a vast repertoire ranging from Bach to Debussy to contemporary modern music. In addition, she is intensely engaged with jazz, pop, and electronic music. Despite her curiosity for the different sound facets, Lavinia Meijer emphasizes that music must touch her emotionally and spiritually. This is exactly what Einaudi has achieved with his works, as she underscores: "His music speaks to me through my fingers and my harp and transcends all boundaries."
