Otis Redding "The King Of Soul"
New 4-CD box set with 92 tracks for the 50th anniversary of the debut "Pain In My Heart“
His powerful voice set standards that entire generations of singers aspired to – but could never reach like he did. Even though OTIS REDDING only lived to be 26 years old, he left his mark as one of the most impressive and powerful singers in music history. And not only as an interpreter did the 1941-born REDDING shine: As a composer, he created the anthem that, through Aretha Franklin's unique interpretation, became a battle cry for female strength: "Respect“. For Black History Month, which was declared in the USA for February 2014, Rhino Records is releasing the 4-CD box OTIS REDDING – The King Of Soul.
The release of The King Of Soul coincides with the 50th anniversary of his debut album "Pain In My Heart", which marked the starting point for REDDING's career, affectionately called "The Big O" by his fans. Moreover, the 1964 album also defined the typical Stax sound from Memphis, Tennessee, which still guarantees musical quality in the soul world. As a comprehensive portrait of OTIS REDDING, "The King Of Soul" presents a total of 92 songs and traces the path of a unique career that illuminated the music sky like a meteor and was tragically cut short by his untimely death in a plane crash in 1967.
The vast range of OTIS REDDING's talent and his exquisite songwriting is clearly evident in songs like "I Can’t Turn You Loose", "Ole Man Trouble", and the immortal "(Sittin‘ On) The Dock Of The Bay", which became a No. 1 hit posthumously. A whole series of live recordings underscore his reputation as a magnetic and highly dynamic performer, such as the recordings from 1966 at the Whisky A Go Go in LA ("These Arms Of Mine", "Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag") and the Olympia Theatre from 1967 ("Shake", "Try A Little Tenderness").
Significantly, REDDING's interpretations transformed covers into authentic OTIS REDDING songs – from Solomon Burke's "Down In The Valley" and William Bell's "Don’t Miss Your Water" to "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones and Smokey Robinson's "My Girl" – all included on "The King Of Soul" in the incomparable versions of OTIS REDDING. Highlights of the 4-CD box also include his legendary collaborations with Carla Thomas, such as on "Lovey Dovey" and "Tramp".
Five studio albums made OTIS REDDING immortal in the music world: "Pain In My Heart" (1964), "The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads" (1965), "Otis Blue" (1965), "The Soul Album" (1966), and "Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul" (1966). In 1967, he recorded the album "Kings & Queens" with Carla Thomas. However, his biggest hit brought him worldwide fame only after his death: it was "(Sittin‘ On) The Dock Of The Bay", for which OTIS REDDING was posthumously awarded a Grammy in 1969.
