Tom Stoppard on the Dark Side of the Moon!
British successful author set his Hörspiel 'Darkside' to Pink Floyd's legendary album 'The Dark Side Of The Moon'
On August 26, 2013, the radio station BBC Radio 2 aired a Hörspiel in honor of the 40th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon, which was set to most of the legendary PINK FLOYD album. The piece was written by successful playwright and screenwriter Sir Tom Stoppard specifically for this broadcast and will be released via ADA for Parlophone / Warner Music Group on November 22 in a CD Deluxe Edition!
"When The Dark Side Of The Moon came out in 1973, a friend visited me in my study with the album in hand and said: ‘You have to write a piece about this album’,” Stoppard recalls. "When Jeff Smith from Radio 2 asked me nearly 39 years later to write a Hörspiel for the 40th anniversary of the album's release, it really wasn’t a difficult decision.”
In collaboration with Stoppard's publisher Faber and Faber, the luxurious edition of Dark Side will be released in an elaborate packaging designed in the form of a hardcover book. It includes the 54-minute Hörspiel, which features most of The Dark Side Of The Moon album, as well as the 56-page script. The artwork comes from Hipgnosis designer Aubrey 'Po' Powell in collaboration with Storm Studios and is based on the exclusive graphics produced by Aardman Animations, which were used to promote the piece. The script contains all dialogues and stage directions, as well as Roger Waters' original album lyrics. The editions released outside the UK will include a bonus CD with text translations in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, and Mandarin.
Dark Side is an abstract and fascinating drama that follows philosophy student Emily through a series of thought experiments that come vividly to life. The piece touches on some central and provocative themes, laced with Stoppard's characteristic wit and humor. Even the cast list is impressive. It features Bill Nighy as Dr Antrobus/The Witch Finder, Rufus Sewell as Mr. Baggott/Ethics Man, Adrian Scarborough as Fat Man, and Amaka Okafor as Emily.
"I was fascinated by Tom's script,” says PINK FLOYD member David Gilmour. "I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon.” Drummer and founding member Nick Mason adds: "I love it. If anyone is allowed to take on this crown jewel of albums, then Tom is the best choice.” And Bill Nighy as Dr. Antrobus notes: "A combination of Tom Stoppard and PINK FLOYD is a big deal, a marriage made in radio heaven.”
The Dark Side Of The Moon spent a total of 741 weeks on the charts between 1973 and 1988. With approximately 50 million copies sold, it is PINK FLOYD's most successful album and is regularly rated as one of the greatest albums of all time.
As a playwright and screenwriter, Tom Stoppard, born in 1937, is one of the great names in the British theater and film world. He wrote, among others, the famous plays The Real Thing and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1967, film adaptation 1990) as well as the screenplays for the films Empire of the Sun (1987), Shakespeare In Love (1998), Enigma (2001), and Anna Karenina (2012).
