An alarming synth sequence, a deep thumping bass drum, pulse-quickening percussion – this is how "Talk To You" begins, the first single from the new PET album "Imitation of Life". Along with the bass, a female voice joins in, trying to tame the madness.
Something is brewing in this sleepless night, as Monika Martin and Andre Abshagen recount. Heart racing, dark dream images dancing across the ceiling, and the pressing certainty that a conversation is overdue, right now, in bed next to the beloved, who is sleeping deeply and seems oblivious to it all. "Everyone knows this situation: an unresolved conflict, a confession, something weighing on your heart, but you don't dare to reveal it. There are a thousand reasons to lie awake and ponder in a relationship," Monika shares, who wrote the lyrics to Andre's composition. "At night, everything takes on an unreal dimension, becoming larger and more threatening than it needs to be, the line between dream and reality blurs, and then talking is really the only solution," she adds. The two PET founders are also a couple in private life. They have since expanded their band into a six-member formation. Three women, three men, and a shared desire to gift the world with artistic electro-pop.
"Talk To You" fits perfectly on the dance floor as well as on the radio. The hook line immediately embeds itself in the memory and is accompanied by songwriting that, despite its reduction, never feels trivial. "On our album, there were quite a few single favorites," Andre recalls, "but both within the band and among almost all our friends, the first choice was 'Talk To You'. It’s probably due to the great cowbell - an instrument we have previously neglected! Ultimately, we were convinced by our nine-year-old niece, who wanted to hear the song on heavy rotation, proving her excellent taste."
The video for the piece comes from Berlin director Marc Helfers, who has worked with many successful German bands. The setting in which PET performs "Talk To You" is grand, silver, and white, suddenly shifting into a midnight blue, electrifying darkness. For the energy and tension of the song, the director finds a congenial visual language with an unleashed camera and rapid cuts. "I wanna talk to you - I need to talk to you," the more urgent the appeal, the faster the carousel of images spins, and the faster PET dances through the night in the video.
The remix of "Talk To You" comes from Brazilian producer/DJ master kina (São Paulo) and never denies the (art) pop appeal of the original, despite its virtuoso and uncompromising beats.
"Talk To You" will be released on 01.11.2013 via Neun Volt Records. The remix by kina is available as a pre-release gift for free download.
The PET album "Imitation Of Life" will be released on 15.11.13
