Warning! Don’t mess with the cowboys! Because “God loves cowboys, believe it or not. If you mess with BossHoss you mess with God!” These are the opening lines from “God Loves Cowboys,” one of the lead tracks from the new The BossHoss album “Flames Of Fame.” And those who know the Berlin crossover outlaws are aware that behind this statement lies not a small amount of irony, but also a refreshingly healthy self-confidence. The gang led by the two frontmen Alec Völkel aka “Boss Burns” and Sascha Vollmer aka “Hoss Power” certainly has plenty of good reasons for such self-confidence and a nearly hip-hop-like swag: After selling more than 1.5 million records in Germany alone, receiving countless awards, platinum and gold records, as well as sold-out tours throughout the entire German-speaking region, The BossHoss are now once again preparing their iron steeds for a new ride through the endless expanses of the big city!
With their 2011 released, platinum-awarded predecessor album “Liberty Of Action,” the daring septet shot to a sensational 4th place in the German longplay charts and was able to score their very first Top 10 single hit in their nearly ten-year successful career with the outtake “Don’t Gimme That.” This marked the big breakthrough for The BossHoss, who, not least due to Alec’s and Sascha’s roles as judges in the Golden Camera and German Television Award-winning talent show “The Voice Of Germany,” evolved from celebrated stars to true megastars and new ambassadors of German rock music. After their renewed ECHO nomination last spring and the furious live comeback at the recent Rock am Ring/Rock im Park festival, The BossHoss are now pouring another load of oil into the already blazing fire with their brand new longplayer “Flames Of Fame” and the pre-single “Do It.”
A fire that burns hotter than ever today, as The BossHoss prove on “Flames Of Fame.” The 7th album in nine years of rock’n’roll mayhem, during which the band has developed into an indispensable cultural asset in the domestic music landscape. This fact is also reflected in the album title “Flames Of Fame.” “On the one hand, the flames of fame seem to shine brightly in the night,” Alec explains about the naming of “Flames Of Fame.”
“You can warm yourself by them, but you can also easily get burned if you become careless and get too close. Then everything you’ve built up until now can burn down much faster than it was created.”
However, The BossHoss have always enjoyed playing with fire, of course without burning their fingers so far. And there’s plenty of heat and glowing passion to be found on “Flames Of Fame”: Fueled by the spirit of great music history, they have once again experimented a bit and refined their unique crossover recipe of country, rock’n’roll, hip-hop, rock, pop, metal, blues, punk, and funk into a homogeneous and previously unmatched old school-meets-new school mix. While “Liberty Of Action” already represented a huge qualitative leap from previous releases in terms of sound, songwriting, and creativity, The BossHoss have once again drastically improved on “Flames Of Fame,” weaving countless new sound colors into their patchwork style.
The newly created material was recorded last spring in the well-established, band-owned recording refuge in Berlin as well as in a studio near Los Angeles. Once again, The BossHoss took a detour to the Land Of The Free and were inspired under the hot Californian sun to create new anthems of freedom. An atmosphere that is also reflected in songs like the first single “Do It,” the forward-driving “Bullpower,” or the truck driver ode “Eager Beaver.” The songs resemble a sunset over L.A.: Somewhere between the hard struggles of the day with its sweaty working-man attitude and a relaxed party spirit when one plunges into exciting wildlife adventures of the nighttime city after work. After the high-tension rodeo rock of “Liberty Of Action,” a similarly powerful, typically Californian cruising-relaxation has now entered the songs. “In my eyes, the pieces sound much rounder. With the new material, we have managed to present everything more compact and clearer. The songs sound much more organized and coherent. I would even go so far as to say that we have arrived at the point we have always wanted to reach and have found our very own sound!” says Sascha.
Starting with the self-explanatory single “Do It,” for which they shot an elaborate video in the legendary 4 Aces Movie Set (where Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” clip was filmed) near Los Angeles in the original 70s Easy Rider style, through the eternal woman vs. man clash “Whatever,” to the unusually profound “Personal Song.” And not only that: Recently, the band has launched its own beer, with which the audience can toast to “Flames Of Fame” just in time for the upcoming Germany tour! And finally, the two frontmen Boss Burns and Hoss Power will be back as judges on Pro7 and Sat.1 in “The Voice Of Germany” this fall. So you see: Don’t mess with The BossHoss!
