Stephen Stills: "Carry On” - The Great 4-CD Retrospective with 25 Unreleased Tracks

He has released over 250 songs since 1966. He has made rock history with not just one but two bands. One is called Buffalo Springfield, and of course, something crucial is always missing if between C for David Crosby, N for Graham Nash, and Y for Neil Young, there isn’t also an S for Stephen Stills. The man from Dallas, Texas has just turned 68. Nash, along with Joel Bernstein, made sure to encapsulate the now 50-year career of his companion and friend with the 4-CD retrospective "Carry On" and unearthed no less than 25 previously unreleased pieces and recordings. Stephen Stills was not only responsible for immortal hits like the free love slogan "Love The One You’re With." Here shines a songwriter who let his conviction speak ("For What It’s Worth") and his heart speak ("Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"). He is also a profoundly versatile musician, at home in folk as well as rock, blues as well as jazz, country as well as Latin, or in a stylish home somewhere in between.

The mostly chronologically arranged "Carry On" anthology starts with the oldest song: The previously unreleased "Travelin‘" was recorded by Stills at the age of 17 in Costa Rica, one of many places he got to know as a child of a military family. The youngest piece here is just a few months old, recorded at the New York Beacon Theatre, where Crosby, Stills & Nash performed five nights in front of sold-out crowds to conclude their world tour in 2012, also interpreting Bob Dylan’s "Girl From The North Country." In between, there is about an hour of music not always by, but always featuring Stephen Stills to discover, which has not been heard before. For example, the "No-Name Jam" that he played in 1970 with his friend Jimi Hendrix in London. Or songs like "Welfare Blues" (1984), "Little Miss Bright Eyes" (1973), and "Who Ran Away?" (1968). There are also early demos of "Forty-Nine Reasons" and "The Lee Shore." Or "Black Coral," which Stills and Neil Young released as a duo in 1976, while CSNY performed the version represented here in full. Also interesting is how "The Treasure" reveals the creative process: The original of the song appeared in 1973 on the self-titled debut of Manassas (a rather chronically underrated Stills band), while the present version was created three years earlier with bassist Calvin Samuels and drummer Conrad Isidore during the "Stephen Stills 2" sessions.

Additionally, the 4-CD set features newly remixed Stills classics, including "Everydays," "4+20," and "Change Partners" (with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel). Some pieces make their CD debut here, such as "Uno Mundo," "War Games," and "Love The One You’re With" in the single mix. Stills’ presence on stage is documented with excerpts from his album "Man Alive" (2005), but there are also new (older) live impressions. "No Tears Left" was sung by CSN in 1997 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, Otis Redding’s "Ole Man Trouble" by CSNY five years later at Madison Square Garden in New York, stylishly accompanied by Booker T. Jones, MG’s bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, and the Memphis Horns. The rest of the repertoire also features guest appearances by Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, or Ray Baretto. "Carry On" also leaves nothing to be desired in terms of packaging: The 113-page booklet is adorned with rare photos and detailed liner notes, including by Daniel Levitin, who made waves with his bestseller "The World In Six Songs." The world of Stephen Stills comes alive in these 82 songs.
