Concert of the Burmese indie/punk band "Side Effect" (Yangon/Myanmar) and "Priscilla Sucks" from Berlin, as well as a screening of the documentary "Yangon Calling - Punk in Myanmar" (featuring Bela B./Die Ärzte) on December 8, 2012, at the Berlin club "Fluxbau", supported by the Goethe Institute.
For almost fifty years, Myanmar was in the hands of a clique of ruthless military leaders, but since the political thaw last year, it has become clear: In Myanmar, there are not only monks, pagodas, and Aung San Suu Kyi, but also a multifaceted band scene.
The band "Side Effect" is the most well-known representative of this scene. Singer and guitarist Darko, bassist Joseff, and drummer Tser Htoo play crystal-clear indie with punk influences that sounds as if the three grew up in London, Manchester, or Birmingham. However, their lyrics are Burmese and deal with the everyday lives of people in a country that has just shaken off dictatorship.
As the first Burmese band, "Side Effect" is now coming to Germany for a concert series with the help of the Goethe Institute. They receive strong support from the Berlin band "Priscilla Sucks!", which delivers high-energy alternative rock with punk to indie flair, fitting the theme. The trip was initiated by Berlin filmmakers Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke. They met the musicians in 2011 while filming "Yangon Calling - Punk in Myanmar". The 60-minute documentary was created during the military dictatorship. It shows the life of "Side Effect" and other bands in the Burmese underground. The narrator of the film is Bela B. /Die Ärzte. The film has recently aired on ZDF Kultur and at numerous film festivals in Germany, the UK, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Finland.
"Yangon Calling" will be screened at "Fluxbau" on December 8, 2012, starting at 8:00 PM. Afterwards, the musicians from "Side Effect" will talk about the situation in Myanmar and answer questions from the audience. Following that, "Side Effect" and "Priscilla Sucks" will perform a concert. In addition to Berlin, the event will also take place in Hamburg and Gera.
