Since early December, an alternative download portal for punk, metal, HC, ska, rock 'n roll, surf, and more has been online at OggStar.com. A song lasting 2-5 minutes is supposed to cost between 70-90 cents, while a complete album, which also includes covers for self-printing, costs a maximum of 8.90 euros. The format in which the music is offered is something special. Instead of relying on licensed formats like WMV or MP3, the unprotected open source Ogg Vorbis is used. Before purchasing, thirty-second audio samples inform about the quality of the presented pieces. Unfortunately, these can only be heard via an integrated Java player. Additional information about the bands can also be found and is intended to help them gain a bit more recognition. Many labels, such as Plastic Bomb, Wolverine, Vitaminepillen, Mad Butcher, and X-Mist, are already represented with their releases. The band Betontod is exclusively offering the song Stillstand from their upcoming new album as a special treat on the site.
