On September 18, the sixth studio album "Minor Tremors" by the Vienna-based band PHAL:ANGST will be released via Noise Appeal Records. The release coincides with the 20th anniversary of the group.
PHAL:ANGST emerged around the turn of the millennium within the context of the Vienna DIY punk and hardcore scene. Musically, the band combines electronic industrial with analog post-rock. Instead of classic verse-chorus structures, slow, atmospheric buildups and a dense, melancholic mood characterize their sound. On the new album, the sound is somewhat rougher and more accessible than on previous releases.
Content-wise, the album addresses social and political themes: the rise of authoritarian and fascist tendencies, feelings of political powerlessness, but also possibilities for solidarity and resistance, as well as personal relationships in times of crisis.
"Grind-glued soundscapes from the swamp of existence: Darkness and daydreaming have rarely found such beauty (and such Austrian) in the pitch-black spot between Mogwai, Nine Inch Nails, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor."
— Paul Poet (director and author)
Throughout their history, PHAL:ANGST have collaborated with artists such as Lustmord, Justin K. Broadrick, Jarboe, Dälek, Electric Indigo, and Gerhard Potuznik, who created remixes of the band's tracks. The band has performed live in various contexts – in addition to clubs and squats, also in museums, galleries, universities, and alternative venues. They have shared the stage with acts including Boris, Lydia Lunch, and Lvmen.
The release concert will take place on September 25 at Rhiz in Vienna – the very place where the band held their first concert in 2006. The event is organized by the collective "liccht" (Herbie Molin).
