"Counted as a Dog" is the latest single from A Deer A Horse in anticipation of their new album Texas Math and their strongest yet.
The song begins with a cutting riff from lead guitarist Marissa Mazzotta, then transitions into a doom metal-inspired groove and features some of the heaviest moments of Texas Math. "The guitar work is a tribute to the heavier bands I grew up with and still love," says Mazzotta. “The heavy low tones of the drop tuning really drive the song and enhance the drums, which fill the big guitar accents with piercing and leading tones.”
Lead singer and bassist Angela Philips found lyrical inspiration in her religious upbringing in Dallas, Texas. "I spent my youth rebelling against and rejecting religious upbringing, which led me to hide and deny my sexuality," says Philips. "It took 28 years for me to recognize the truth about myself, and I still struggle with the internalized shame that was instilled in me."
With this lyrical context in mind, the band named the song after a Bible verse: 'A shameless woman will be counted as a dog.' "I would rather be counted as a dog than go back to the half-realized person I once was," says Philips.
"Counted as a Dog" was produced by A Deer A Horse and mixed by Jamie Uertz at Gojira's Silver Cord Studio in New York City. Their new album Texas Math will be released on September 27 everywhere and is A Deer A Horse's first full-length album on the Hamburg label Rookie Records.
The band will tour the USA in November 2024, with a European tour following in spring 2025.
