The first Rancid EP was exclusively released on 7-inch vinyl by Lookout! Records in 1992 and was the groundbreaking, five-track introduction of the band to punk rock, setting the tone for a now over thirty-year-long, productive, and subversive career.
Recently, Rancid's "B Sides and C Sides" compilation of earlier works was also made available for the first time as a collection on streaming services. The originally released 24-track set from 2007 includes songs from 1992 to 2004.
Rancid's EP, with its rough vocal duels and pounding drums, slick bass lines, and furious riffs, was the entry point into the typical street punk sound that the band has refined and developed over the years. A review from Punk News highlights the powerful instrumentation: "This EP is a fast-paced, furious, and energetic recording that doesn't take a single break in terms of intensity."
The band was founded in 1991 by founding members Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman (formerly of Operation Ivy) and brought in Armstrong's roommate, drummer Brett Reed, for the wild ride. After several attempts to recapture the magic of the brief but successful phase of Operation Ivy, they sparked something with Rancid and recorded their first album just a few months after forming.
With their spirited, anthemic hymns, Rancid has firmly clung to their punk roots across several generations. The availability of these early recordings on streaming platforms ensures that their legacy is more accessible than ever and allows a new audience to experience the raw energy and rebellious spirit that made Rancid a household name.
Over the past three decades, Rancid has remained independent and has never lost loyalty to their community or to each other. Their music addresses political and social issues while balancing personal stories of love, loss, and heartbreak with attitude. By continuing the traditions and spirit of the original punk rock bands before them, Rancid has become a legend and inspires the punk bands that have come after them.
