I have to admit that I only knew a handful of songs by Kärbholz before this evening at the Herford "X", but I found those very good. Since some friends intended to have a blast at the "X" this Saturday night, I joined them. However, work came first, so I set off solo later and arrived at the "X" just after 8. Unfortunately, the opening act The Beatburners had already finished their gig :-(
I must also confess that I expected significantly more attendees, based on what I had heard about Kärbholz so far. In the spacious "Mainhall" of the "X", there were only about 250 - 300 people, according to my rough estimate. I've seen concerts there with 2000 or more people. The club has a long history, having been known as "Kick" and "Rock Heaven", and really everyone has played there, truly everyone... My first concert over 20 years ago was Bad Religion in an extremely packed house... but oops, I'm digressing a bit ;-)
But even though it wasn't full, the audience was in great spirits and knew the lyrics! I had the feeling that for nearly every song, at least half of the audience was singing along! And for the few songs I knew up to that point, I felt compelled to sing along as well; the atmosphere practically encouraged it. The excellent sound in the hall was also not entirely innocent in this; it was perfectly mixed, though the vocals were a bit unclear for me. The fans who own the band's five albums and know the lyrics by heart probably didn't notice, as they were singing along anyway, but for me, who was listening closely because I didn't know all the songs, it stood out. On the other hand, well, my hearing isn't what it used to be either ;-) Nevertheless, I listened closely, as there are ups and downs with German rock bands; they all sing about friendship, love, and hate, but I want nothing to do with some, like Frei.Wild and Co. And I was aware that Kärbholz had already played with the latter, so I listened even more intently. It greatly satisfied me that they have a song called "Timmi, halt´s Maul" in their set against the fascists and clearly took a stand in the song's announcement.
This was in the last third of their approximately 100-minute set, which went steeply forward except for the middle part. In the middle part, they only played "Halb-Gas Rock´n´Roll" with a concert guitar and so on. The atmosphere didn't drop, but the "Pogo" was absent for those 20 minutes. Fortunately, in the last third, there was "Voll-Gas Rock´n´Roll" again, and besides the usual mosh pit, there was also a circle pit on instruction from the stage. That was something, and the audience was really into it. The four guys also didn't miss the chance to play a song in Kölsch dialect ["da kommen sie wech", as we would say in East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL)]. For that, bassist Stefan even left the stage and led a conga line through the audience while playing bass. Yes, yes, the people from Cologne...
There were two encore sections to conclude, and I have to commend the East Westphalian-Lippe (OWL) audience, which is known for its reserve and stubbornness. Such euphoric, frenzied applause including loud and multi-voiced encore calls is something I'm not used to here in OWL!!! Respect!!! In the first or second encore section, The Beatburners also came on stage, pure happening. After the second encore, the disco music was quickly turned up, so unfortunately, a third encore was swiftly put to an end.
