On Saturday, October 24, 2009, two very special bands were guests at S.O. 36 in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The Leipzig-based LOIKAEMIE played today with their friends from LOS FASTIDIOS from Verona, Italy. Also present were KATTIVA REPUTAZIONES from near Milan, who made the long journey just for this gig.
Around 8:30 PM, we arrived at the already quite well-filled S.O. 36. There were almost as many people there as at the Sondaschule gig two days earlier. The average age was also noticeably higher. The atmosphere was already very good. It promised to be a great evening.
Right on time at 9:00 PM, KR started their three-quarter-hour set. The band opened with a cover of The Clash. However, since the three guys were quite nervous, it didn't go as planned. After that, the band played their own songs. The nervousness gradually faded away. The band found it particularly confusing that the audience clapped politely but otherwise remained quite quiet. KR made thematically the same announcements as later LOS FASTIDIOS, and there the crowd responded enthusiastically. In contrast, KR had to earn every reaction hard.
KR played catchy, albeit mostly rather simply structured street punk that clearly had influences from '77 punk, but also from rock and Oi.
Gradually, the audience warmed up. By the last songs, there was even some dancing, while S.O. 36 continued to fill up. KR became increasingly confident over time, and all in all, it was certainly not a bad concert for the band.
By now, S.O. 36 was very well filled. I estimate it was almost sold out, and the atmosphere was splendid. During the slightly longer changeover to LOS FASTIDIOS, people replenished their drinks at the bar and positioned themselves as close to the stage as possible. So it was no surprise that it got quite crowded at the front.
When the guys from Verona took the stage, a murmur went through the audience. The first notes were eagerly awaited, and as they sounded, pogo broke out immediately. From the first line, everyone sang along and danced vigorously. The announcements about class struggle, antifascism, and the political system, which had been acknowledged silently by KR, were loudly applauded here.
The three guys from KR didn't take it badly, as they were also seen in the middle of the audience having fun and enjoying the evening, just like many hundreds of others. The band played many songs from their last two albums, and the setlist was sprinkled with some all-time favorites of the band like “Antifa-Hooligan.” When the first stage diver made it onto the stage, diving began at all corners, and the atmosphere rose even higher.
Everyone at the front was really having fun, the mood was fantastic, and there was nothing to complain about the sound. Everything was just right here. LOS FASTIDIOS emphasized their status as an absolute live band that is always worth seeing!
As the last band, LOIKAEMIE from Leipzig played. The three took their time, allowing everyone to get a drink. It got quite crowded at the front again, although the audience there changed quite a bit. There were more skins at the front than at the previous bands. When LOIKAEMIE took the stage and the first songs sounded, proper pogo started. Harder than at LOS FASTIDIOS and with more alcohol in the blood. Unfortunately, the atmosphere at the front was no longer as peacefully exuberant but rather more aggressive. Nothing happened, but somehow the positive spirit was somewhat gone. The band played a very professional and very good set, which provided a good overview of the Leipzig band's previous work. Songs like “Good Night White Pride,” “Trinkfestigkeit,” or “Wir sind geil, wir sind schön” were sung along hundreds of times and are extreme crowd-pleasers live.
Nevertheless, LOIKAEMIE was quite a stylistic break after LOS FASTIDIOS. LOIKAEMIE had a powerful street punk sound that still clearly has its roots in Oi but sees the pressure of street punk as an essential component of the songs. Overall, the audience still had a lot of fun, and an almost sold-out S.O. 36 speaks a clear language.
