Do you know the feeling when you listen to a new album for the first time and the first 10 seconds scream at you: Damn, what a bad purchase!
That’s exactly how I felt with the new 6-track E.P. “Just Like You’d Leave Us, We’ve Left You For Dead” by DEATH BY STEREO. The first 10 seconds of the first track “Neverending” are marked by a screeching guitar, like you only hear from the nastiest Black / Heavy Metal bands. I can’t stand that at all....
How good that after the 11th second, the sound changed dramatically. Suddenly, powerful, fast melodic hardcore blasted from the speakers. My thumb abruptly turned 180 degrees up! What a change in intonation! Unfortunately, right in the middle of the song, there was another guitar solo, so subjectively, my thumb went down briefly again. But aside from these two interruptions, the first of the six tracks was a hit. Track 2 “Wrong Color, Wrong Town” was even better, because this time the guitar solo was just a short little thing.... It was hardly noticeable, and otherwise, the song rocked, wow.
Unfortunately, the guitar solo peace was already over again. In the next 4 songs, the guitar was given free rein more often. A delicate guitar cowboy from the City of Angels needs his freedom, even if I can’t stand those screeching high guitar solos at all. And because I’m so fed up with these screeching solos, “They Feed Us Death” featuring Thomas Barnett from STRIKE ANYWHERE, “I Think About Killing You Everyday”, “Enslaved”, and “I Don’t Know Where You’re Coming From Bro...” get a 2-point deduction. If you’re into that, just add those 2 points back to the rating.
Aside from this guitar inferno, the 6 DEATH BY STEREO songs are really awesome and grab hold of your ears tightly. I don’t even know how many times I’ve listened to these melodic 20 minutes of hardcore playfulness... Simply great and for an E.P., also a good playing time.
Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about the booklet, as I don’t have it. Nor the lyrics, which is a shame... Another point deduction, but that will be nullified by the fact that the E.P. is also available as a 12” vinyl record! Applause!!! Thumb back up ;-)
