Sometimes it is really difficult to determine a music style. REQUIEM describes themselves as New Post Hardcore and lists bands like MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, AFI, and A DAY TO REMEMBER as comparisons. I see it a bit differently, especially since each song is stylistically different. The album starts with a short dark industrial song in the style of NINE INCH NAILS, transitions to Metalcore in the style of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, and then to Nu Metal in the style of LINKIN PARK. Musically, the 14 songs are top-notch, and there is one to three-part vocal harmonies. Always present is Ex I AM GHOST head leader Steven Juliano. But the screams from guitarist Ryan Heggum are also powerful, and for a change, there’s the sweet voice of the second guitarist Jacklyn Paulette. So vocally layered in duets or trios, the vocals are true icing on the cake. And to complete the Californian band, we still need Rick Siegfried on drums and Finn Stobbe on bass.
In addition to the power songs, there are also quieter pop songs or songs where only Jacklyn Paulette sings. The latter remind me of NIGHTWISH and WITHIN TEMPTATION, and I don't like either of those bands (at least not their singing).... I feel the same way about "The Unexplainable Truth". But honestly, aside from the singing in 1-2 songs, REQUIEM can convince me more than enough!!!
I am blown away by these dark, melodic, hard metal rock songs and I have certainly listened to this CD with its 55 minutes at least three dozen times in the car (that's why this review is coming so late ;-) ), volume knob on 10 and attack!
Unfortunately, I can't give the debut album a perfect score! As fat and perfect as this album was recorded, the production costs were certainly high, and then the CD is released with such a cheap booklet, which really hurts. At first glance, the cover and the inlay card still look high quality, but when you open the booklet, there’s only a band photo and that’s it. So anyone who buys a CD these days should expect more. At least the lyrics, which I can't comment on because of this.
P.S. A short audio sample of all 14 songs can be heard on YouTube! Top !!!!
P.P.S. By the way, there are several bands named REQUIEM, so be careful when purchasing!!!
