DIE LOKALMATADORE have actually managed to release a new album. Never Mind the Söhne Mannheims, here are the Söhne Mülheims!
Mühlheim an der Ruhr is quite different from Mannheim. This is well known, but now it has also been musically established.
But how does one start a review about an album from a band that is cult? There’s a lot that can go wrong. DIE LOKALMATADORE, you just have to love them! Every concert is unique. Every concert is one of a kind.
Ten years have passed since the last album. Naturally, the expectations are high.
These are immediately met with the first song. “Ja wat den ??!“ is not only a perfect musical bow to King Football, alongside King Alcohol the second ruler in this country, but also an almost dadaistic statement against all those who can’t stand the band. After that, you can also go out and “Saufen gehen“. A song that you wouldn’t expect from the quartet from Mühlheim an der Ruhr any other way.
The fourth song is fine musical material called “Arsch voll Kot“. Yes, that’s what it’s called.
And the lyrics are so 100% LOKALMATADORE that you just want to invite the band for a case of Pils. “Dreierlei Geschmack“, the following song, features lyrical gems like “Der Pimmel schmeckt wie Spritzgebäck. Die F*** schmeckt wie Rührei mit Speck“. Man, Fisch, how do you come up with such lyrics? Fantastic!
Up to this point, the record is quite typical LOKALMATADORE. Musically, there’s much more pressure behind it than the last album, and also more tempo. Punk rock is definitely not lacking. But a good handful of other styles can also be heard. There’s even a great surf song in the mix!
With the “Steigerlied”, which is seen as a tribute to the golden times of the Ruhr area and still pays homage to the few remaining miners who still extract the heavily subsidized hard coal from the earth underground, the stylistic mix of this album begins.
The other songs still have punk as their basic framework but are significantly more varied than expected.
Instead of Schalke 04, now the “VfB Speldorf (the new power from the Lower Rhine)” from Mühlheim an der Ruhr is celebrated. Nice, because the first division clubs are all completely commercialized by now.
In the end, it’s still “Pipi machen, Zähne putzen, ab ins Bett” and also for the “Komischen Analphabeten” (another artistic gem). I will do that now too. My case of beer is empty, and the verdict can only be: Fantastic!
But you still have to give it a listen, because this record is definitely a different caliber than the last album.
