grandMal come from Cologne and have been practicing their style of music since 1997 with the same lineup. The band is very familiar to me, and I can say that they have significantly improved in terms of quality and rhythm. Complexity is thrown around and recalculated, served up with a somewhat dark vibe reminiscent of Marilyn Manson's sound, mixed with rocking open beats. As they themselves write, formal before emotional, but they go full throttle forward. One might expect more power from the drums, but this is now intentional; they are laid-back and casual, even at times played too simply. What definitely characterizes this group are their live shows. Sometimes packaged as a bloody mummy with running televisions that display no program, or like at the last concert, where they had the game Doom 3 running in the background, which a friend was playing simultaneously in the Deutzer Kunsthallen. Here I now hold the second official release of the band in my hands. At first, I thought they had released a DVD video under their own label MUTUAL BRAIN DESTRUKTION, which was already responsible for the first EP. Well, it was a music CD, 5 songs that really get under your skin. In terms of sound, it’s about four and a half times better than the EP, and it hits hard! They haven’t changed much in style... they repeat parts and mix them with industrial blasting and screaming guitars, and there’s growling as if one were lying on a rack. It fits here! Song 5 is annoyingly long... it’s exhausting! But otherwise, a big compliment, and definitely check out a show by grandMal or better yet, get the record!
