The Reckless One, the successor to the Juno-nominated Run To Me from 2018, is another significant step forward for Samantha Martin as a songwriter, singer, arranger, and bandleader. Eleven of the twelve songs on the album were either co-written or solely composed by the versatile and multifaceted artist. The only non-original song, a funk cover of Bob Dylan's "Meet Me in the Morning", combines Dylan's lyrics in a catastrophic collision with the sensibility of the Meters and the hurricane force of Howlin' Wolf and Tina Turner. You simply have to hear it to believe it.
The Reckless One was produced by Darcy Yates and Renan Yildizdogan and clearly builds on the strengths of Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar's last album. Martin's lyrics, underscored by a variety of catchy, earworm-worthy melodies, revolve around the ups and downs of love: longing, disappointment, and, if all goes well, emotional and sexual satisfaction. The twelve tracks on the album cover a wide range, including 12/8 gospel-infused soul ballads like "I've Got a Feeling" and "Better to Have Never", funk-influenced tracks like "Love is All Around", and thumping four-on-the-floor dance numbers embodied by "Don't Have To Be" and the Wall of Sound-influenced "Sacrifice". Throughout the album, the attentive listener will discover a whole array of influences ranging from Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones, and Otis Redding to Booker T. and the MG's and the Memphis Horns. One piece, "All That I Am", even recalls the emotions of the early 70s.
