Reggae and Düsseldorf – not necessarily the most obvious connection on paper. Punk from Düsseldorf? More likely. THE TiPS can do both – and much more. Hot reggae, punchy punk and rock, along with a pinch of soul, are the ingredients of the sparkling musical flavor explosion that the trio unleashes on record and on stage. Their latest album creation, TWISTS'N'TURNS, which will be released on February 19, 2016, via Long Beach Records, does not break with this tradition. No, TWISTS'N'TURNS even takes a step further, preparing for a big leap and continuing the TiPS' successful recipe as rock-reggae pioneers in the German music market.
The opener ‘Birds In Trees’ leaves no doubt about this: Here, relaxed reggae rhythms meet a wall of guitars and a chorus that would certainly suit Muse well. Joining in is Benji Webbe, the singer of the British reggae metallers SKINDRED, as a notable guest star at the microphone. Elsewhere on TWISTS'N'TURNS, you can hear a hint of Hendrix echoing on the beach (‘Wasting Time’), the Beatsteaks are sent to surf school (‘Chosen Fool’), or one moves faster than any other Rasta cowboy (‘Do It Right’). Despite all the escapist sensory intoxication, THE TiPS do not shy away from serious topics. On ‘Leaving Home’ or ‘Parade’, the band strikes decidedly more contemplative and socially critical tones as they engage with the current refugee crisis. Additionally, tracks like ‘Alien’ or ‘City Lights’ illuminate personal facets of failure in a capital-driven, uniform society where there is no room for individuality and diversity, while ‘If You Want To’ makes the creative process and art itself a subject of reflection in a postmodern reference.
THE TiPS are like an uncut diamond whose brilliance is yet to be discovered and which knows how to enchant across genres – the promising resonances fully justify this. Whether on the street or in the ears – TWISTS'N'TURNS lives up to its name in every respect. And THE TiPS are gearing up for their biggest spin yet with their third album.
