On February 27, 2015, "Oldschool," the 18th studio album of the German New Wave legend NENA, will be released. In keeping with the title, NENA will present the new material in March on an extensive club tour through former venues. "Oldschool" can be pre-ordered now, and the first single "Lieder von früher" is available everywhere digitally and physically starting today.
On her new album, NENA impresses with a fresh sound. She owes this to a new musical companion - none other than the German rap prodigy Samy Deluxe produced "Oldschool." The result of this unusual collaboration is proof that NENA is not only old school in the best sense but also remains right in tune with the times after more than 30 years. Samy Deluxe: "NENA can embody everything, from punk rock to the most beautiful ballads, while always remaining authentic." Thus, "Oldschool" offers a wide sound spectrum from bass-heavy anthems and melancholic earworms to driving guitar pop, with a cheeky punk attitude and now and then a fat electro beat that has never been heard from NENA before.
"Oldschool," the title track and opener of the album, gets straight to the point: "My first album has been out for 34 years, it's so old you can't even buy it in stores anymore." And along with that, the fat electro beat. Straight from the 80s, right into the now.
NENA also dares to tackle more serious themes as usual. The song "Bruder" tells of her deceased son Christopher and that death is part of life. "Everything that challenges and directs me was given to me by heaven," it says. Critical tones that encourage questioning one's own life can also be heard. "Betonblock," "Kreis," and "Mach doch was ich will" are pieces where NENA not only takes a harder lyrical approach.
"Oldschool" clearly celebrates NENA's roots, which is evident in the first single from the album. The title is "Lieder von früher" (available digitally everywhere now and physically in stores starting January 23, 2015), and one looks forward to seeing her jump around on stage with a guitar around her neck. She will do just that at the album release on a tight club tour through former venues, with capacities ranging from 250 to 800 people:
