SPANDAU BALLET were to the 1980s what The Who were to the 60s, Bowie to the 70s, and Oasis to the 90s: they defined the style and music of the decade! As a recently released documentary titled "Soulboys Of The Western World" clearly shows, their shows and image were about more than just music. SPANDAU BALLET were the epicenter of fashion and youth culture, speaking with the voice of an audience that had not been heard before.
In the early 80s, SPANDAU BALLET were the band for all those who were hip, launching an era where pop was dominated by visuals. Their mechanically sounding, stylish sound was born on the dance floors of the West End, where the Bowie Kids, the Blitz Kids, and the white soul boys discovered stylish shirts, tuxedos, and not least, electronica.
SPANDAU BALLET were the spearheads of a new pop era that would spread across the globe in the following years. Together with Duran Duran, Sade, Culture Club, Wham!, and a few dozen other bands that emerged from the "New Romantic" scene at the end of the 70s, SPANDAU BALLET drove the pop revolution forward until they became globally successful superstars in the mid-80s.
With 23 hit singles and a total of 500 weeks on the UK charts, SPANDAU BALLET became one of the most commercially successful bands of the decade. Over 25 million albums were sold in a short time, and some of their songs like "True", "Gold", and "Through The Barricades" are still frequently played standards today. "True" was played over four million times in North America alone, and "Gold" became the unofficial soundtrack of the 2012 Olympic Games in London!
In their ten years of existence, SPANDAU BALLET moved from the nightclubs of Soho and Ibiza to Hollywood and the largest stadiums in Europe and Australia. They came, they saw, they partied. And then they left. It wasn't until the 2009/2010 season that they returned with an enormously successful, completely sold-out tour – true to the line from "True" that says: "and then they came back again“.
‘The Story....’ brings together the best songs by SPANDAU BALLET and complements the collection of great hits with three brand new songs: "This Is The Love", "Steal", and "Soul Boy", which were specifically recorded for this album together with producer legend Trevor Horn, with whom SPANDAU BALLET had previously collaborated on the 1982 album "Instinction". The double CD version expands the repertoire of "The Story..." with additional hits and extra tracks and mixes that are also featured in the film.
The CD and Deluxe double CD will be released on October 10, 2014, by Warner Music.
