The heavy rainfall on Monday, July 28, 2014, in Münster and the surrounding area claimed two lives and caused property damage of an as yet unassessable amount. Many lost all their possessions due to the intrusion of rain and sewage water, if not their homes, and now face existential problems. While firefighters, the Technical Relief Organization, and countless volunteers are still battling the floodwaters and clearing basements, it is already necessary to counteract the long-term consequences through material and monetary donations for those affected - a task to which Münster's alternative music scene also wants to contribute in the form of a benefit concert.
Between 120 and 300 liters of precipitation per square meter left a picture of destruction in Münster last Monday. The neighborhoods of Kinderhaus and Coerde were particularly hard hit, where firefighting teams from large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Technical Relief Organization, and some volunteers who traveled from afar are still trying to eliminate the damage to this day.
On the same evening, a comprehensive online network formed for those seeking help and those offering their assistance for immediate cleanup efforts. The coordination of material donations also largely took place online. To counteract the long-term effects of the "century flood," financial donations will also be necessary alongside material ones.
Now Münster's thriving alternative music scene in recent years will also do its part. For this purpose, an initiative of various concert organizers from the cathedral city has teamed up with the Münster label Uncle M to organize a benefit concert on 14.08.2014 for the victims of the storm disaster. On that evening, the American punk rock legend Anti-Flag, the Münster band Mr. Irish Bastard, and the two Berlin bands Radio Havanna and Smile And Burn will perform at the Sputnikhalle (Am Hawerkamp 31, 48155 Münster).
The entire proceeds from the event will be donated to the victims of the storm disaster.
All participants are working completely voluntarily: The artists waive their fees, the Sputnikhalle is provided free of charge, and Cardiac Communication Ltd. provides graphics and press work without charge. The catering for the musicians is largely covered by donations from the Super Bio Markts Münster and the organic food retailer Davert GmbH.
Doors open at 18:00, the concert starts at 19:00, and entry is through a minimum donation of €10.
