"Shelter" is Alcest's fourth album, the current assessment of a long and very creative musical journey into immeasurably vast, new realms. More consistent than ever, the French band, consisting mainly of frontman and multi-instrumentalist Neige and drummer Winterhalter, embraces shoegaze-typical guitar soundscapes and combines them with the sweet charm of the British dream-pop pioneers Cocteau Twins, as well as epic, soundtrack-like melodies and progressive song structures.
As guests, Slowdive's Neil Halstead appears as a vocalist on the track "Away," Billie Lindahl from the Swedish group Promise And The Monster, and the strings of Amiina make a special appearance. "Shelter" was recorded in Iceland at Sundlaugin Studio with Sigur Rós producer Birgir Jón Birgisson, who refined the songs with a light, ethereal sound.
Regarding the concept of the album, its title speaks for itself: "Shelter" is about the notion of refuge in the sense of a place of safety, where one can temporarily escape from everyday life to reconnect with what one truly is at heart. Neige's personal refuge turned out to be the sea, which inspired all the pieces of this album, which is why he dedicates it to that.
