BUIKA sings the longest night
The great Spanish singer Concha Buika will release her new album "La Noche Más Larga" on November 15, 2013.
Her voice possesses the intensity of the great Spanish and Latin American singers, and the comparison with the unique Charvela Vargas is often made when talking about Concha BUIKA. With 'La Noche Más Larga' ("The Longest Night"), the impressive singer presents her sixth album, and the first after her remarkable Best Of album En Mi Piel (2011), with which she gained many fans in Germany. The songs she wrote for the soundtrack of the film "The Skin I Live In" by Pedro Almodóvar also caught the world's attention and led to extensive and highly successful world tours. "I have grown since then," says BUIKA, who was born in Mallorca and has family roots in Equatorial Guinea. However, fame has not gone to her head, as "everything I sing, I sing with the same heart."
The album 'La Noche Más Larga' contains twelve songs, five of which are penned by BUIKA herself. Two of them were already recorded for 'En Mi Piel', but they appear on the album in radically revised versions: The first single 'Cómo Era' and 'Sueño Con Ella' reveal an artist who transcends stylistic conventions with passion and strength. Her songs invite listeners on a journey through jazz, flamenco, African and Cuban music, showcasing the unmistakable style of a unique singer, who also surprises with an outstanding collaboration: The currently most successful jazz guitarist Pat Metheny can be heard on 'No Lo Sé'. The seven cover songs come from classic songwriting greats like Roque Natvaja, Fito Páez, Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, Dino Ramos, Lecuno, and Jacques Brel, and harmoniously fit into BUIKA's musical universe.
Furthermore, BUIKA is supported on the album by "her two pillars, her boys, two beacons", namely Ivan 'Melón' Lewis (piano, keyboards, percussion, arrangements, and musical direction) and Ramón Porrina (percussion, backing vocals, arrangements). BUIKA produced 'La Noche Más Larga' together with Eli Wolf, who was awarded a Grammy this year, and recorded it with him at the BB&B Studios in Miami and at the Sear Sound Studios in New York.
And here is 'La Noche Más Larga', an album that BUIKA describes as a wonderful farewell and a warm welcome: "It’s only about the journey for me, not the destination. I started to feel like I wanted to reach an end, but no... I will take more risks."

SUEÑO CON ELLA
Ivan, Ramón, and I went into the studio. Ramón started to play and I spontaneously sang along, giving him instructions like ... ?now a bit more Afro, now a bit more this and that...‘ It was beautiful to return to this song and vary it according to how I felt at that time. I have to make music with other musicians, and those who were there know how to accompany me best; they always know exactly where I am. You can’t imagine what it’s like to sing and have these two by your side. We have a connection beyond words.
SIBONEY
A classic by Ernesto Lecuona. The master Chuco Valdés once told me: ?Siboney is your song, you have to sing it.“ I told him that I didn’t know the song... I could have died of shame. Then one day I stumbled upon Connie Francis’s version. It hit me straight in the heart.
NE ME QUITTE PAS
I have always loved this song. It is a universal love poem. It has a sadness that feels like total devotion. I limited myself to singing only two verses. Maybe one day I will be able to sing it completely without sinking into it, but at the moment I don’t know if I could do it without breaking down.
YO VENGO A OFRECER MI CORAZÓN
I first heard the song from Mercedes Sosa. It expresses a very common feeling. In all the years I have traveled the world, I have met many people who have done the same – fighting for survival. This song by Fito Páez helps us see that we know each other much better than we think, and that we progress better than we imagine. Yes, everything is in a sad state, but I have come to offer my heart, and to show that there is a chance for us to master things.
LA NAVE DEL OLVIDO
My mother often listened to this song by Dino Ramos, a song that hurts and heals me at the same time. It helps me often and a lot, which is why I wanted to sing it at my performances. It’s one of those songs that brings me closer to my home, closer to the memories. The version I took as a reference, the one by Bambino, is simply wonderful.
LA NOCHE MÁS LARGA (The Longest Night)
That’s how I felt when I wrote the song: As if I had come out of an endless night. I think it’s a great title. Every moment is good and productive for me, even if someone has left me or I lose money. Every moment counts.
DON’T EXPLAIN
This is about the extremes of love, which today are considered the tyranny of love... and they are... but what wonderful moments! The song by Billie Holiday tells of a woman who asks her lover not to explain, but just to stay. There are people who argue, and people who choose to enjoy without all the drama.
NI LO SÉ
I recorded the song with Pat Metheny, who is extraordinary. He changed my thinking in that one week we spent working on the song. I am really very grateful to him, as he helped me let go of many things for which I received other things without feeling indebted to him. He is now forever by my side, another one of my maestros. Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Chuco Valdés... all of them have taken away my fears. Now I have to follow them to get them back.
SANTA LUCÍA
I came across this song by Roque Narvaja through the great Miguel Rios, of whom I have been a big fan since I was a child, and this was one of my favorite songs. It speaks of that wonderful, impulsive feeling we associate with young people... I don’t know why that is, as the ability to fall in love does not depend on age.
LOS SOLOS
This song has accompanied me for years. First in an electronica version, then as a samba. I have always carried it around on my computer, but it knew its way very well and then found its way onto this album, where it blossomed. It’s about feelings in real time. Those who love the most are always lonely. My heart always goes with my son, my sister, and my mother, and I often think about where they might be at this moment and what they might be doing. That’s this song.
CÓMO ERA
When I started this album, I wanted to listen to the music that was in my head. Sometimes we find the ideas of other people brilliant and forget to appreciate our own. But when you think about your own project, your own ideas should come first, as they are closer to what you want to express. That’s why I returned to this song as well.
THROW IT AWAY
A composition by Abbey Lincoln, another one of those songs that springs from my memory. Sometimes there are melodies that keep coming back to your mind, and this is one of those mantras. I always carry it within me, which is why I decided to sing it, as it has simply never left me. When a song wants to come out, it’s because another one is pushing against it, wanting to get past it.
