And when not a single note is sung, but only fairy tales are read, it becomes truly exciting.
"How dare you climb into my garden and steal my Rapunzels like a thief!" hisses Olli Schulz in the name of the wicked witch, and anyone who thought the Hamburg singer could only sing funny songs or embarrass red carpets as Charles Schulzkowski will quickly be proven wrong. No one has told "Rapunzel" in such a creepy way before.
Listeners will similarly be surprised by most of the 17 songwriters who have come together to read a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm in its original version from 1812-57 in their own interpretation. The Hamburg songwriter Wolfgang Müller with his small label FRESSMANN is the initiator and producer of this extraordinary audiobook project in the GRIMM year 2013. One would have been glad to get half of the requested musicians on board for this idea, but despite record releases and tour stress, all the desired readers agreed to read their chosen fairy tale.
From classics like "The Puss in Boots" (Marcus Wiebusch), "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs" (Pohlmann), or "The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids" (Thees Uhlmann) to completely unknown stories like "Lazy Heinz" (Niels Frevert) or "Of the Death of the Chick" (Moritz Krämer) - seventeen of the best indie songwriters tell the old stories in the old language, touching, funny, sometimes frightening, and exciting. When Gisbert zu Knyphausen as the Frog King calls out to the ungrateful princess, "Princess, Youngest! Let me in!" it’s already worth listening. And with "Sleeping Beauty," the Duisburg original Tom Liwa delivers a masterpiece of storytelling that makes the listener hardly dare to breathe. Between the fairy tales, Dinesh Ketelsen, former guitarist of Fink, improvises dusty and gnarled little pieces on his acoustic lap steel guitar, always fitting. All of this together results in an album that restores the dignity of the fairy tales, beyond kitsch and trivialization, and the magnificent illustrations by Hamburg tattoo artist Jules Wenzel fit seamlessly into this.
As is fitting for a fairy tale album, "Once Upon a Time and If They Haven't" is released in addition to the double CD as a 3-vinyl box – hand-numbered and limited to 500 copies. No one probably believes that you can really listen to all 17 fairy tales in one go. But you can listen to them again and again. Every evening a different one.
