The pure power of the song
The Belgian Jonathan Vandenbroeck is better known by his stage name Milow. He has long become synonymous with a charismatic voice, irresistible melodies, and inventive arrangements. Few artists are as frequently seen on concert stages as Milow, a guarantee for gold and platinum awards. His shows are so intense that the audience remains captivated for days afterward. It is no coincidence that Milow has released his first live album "Maybe Next Year" after two studio albums. With "From North To South Live," the next live-recorded album is already here. Other artists take 40 years to produce two live albums. "I just love singing my songs live," Milow says happily, "the soul power of the songs cannot be purer, and the audience's reactions cannot be more immediate. That’s why I love capturing them live on CD as well."
Live kick and depth of soul
This love for the live world can be traced back to Milow's own experiences. "The most important records in my collection are live albums," he reflects. "I discovered my favorite artists through them. Neil Young, for example, or Bruce Springsteen. I only really understood him when I could listen to his live albums." These listening experiences are so impactful for Milow that he bases his artistic creation on them. No song has a chance of being recorded unless it has been thoroughly tested live. "As soon as I’ve written a piece, it wants to go out on stage; it wants to feel the unique atmosphere, the impressions, feelings, and emotions," he shares. "You can learn so much from the audience's reaction. Afterwards, I arrange it to completion and then record it." This way of writing is not an attempt to pander to the audience or a search for hit-worthy tracks. He wants to engage in a dialogue. One that occurs simultaneously with the piece and the audience. One that truly breathes life into the songs, allowing them to grow and giving them exactly what makes a piece truly great: depth of soul.
"Music is my life and not just a job," Milow could not have articulated his credo better. And life, after all, happens live! And with Milow, live means live: no playback, no distracting costume show, no fireworks, and no other tricks. Just him and the pure power of his songs. "That’s why I love making live albums, because I want to convince people to go to concerts," he laughs, "the mp3 generation should hear my songs in real time and say, damn, why wasn’t I at that concert?" One thing is for sure, anyone who has heard "From North To South Live" will not miss the next Milow show.
