On March 9, 2012, Rufus Wainwright released "Out Of The Game," the first eSingle from his new, self-titled album, produced by Mark Ronson.
The track is the perfect appetizer for a wonderfully catchy album that unabashedly conjures and celebrates the spirit of the 1970s. According to Rufus himself, it is "the poppiest album I've ever made." And the title track is a true gem that, while unmistakably bearing Wainwright's signature, sounds a bit like Steely Dan at their best with its soulful gospel background vocals, piano, and electric guitar parts.
Rufus reveals that he was inspired by today's kids and their obsession with YouTube. "In the first two verses, I complain, but in the third, there's a bit of envy as well," says the singer. "I would love to be that age again and so silly, getting excited about such ridiculous things."
"Out Of The Game" is likely to be one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year. In Germany, it will be released on April 20. Other highlights of Rufus Wainwright's seventh studio album include the gospel rock number "Jericho" and the two classically minimalist songs "Montauk" and "Candles." The latter is a heartfelt ode to the artist's mother, singer Kate McGarrigle, who passed away in 2010.
All in all, this album wonderfully reminds us that we should always be prepared for a musical miracle from Rufus Wainwright. "Out Of The Game" is certainly one of them.
