ERASURE “Tomorrow’s World” [Album] Release Date: 30.09.2011 MUTE/GoodToGo
Info: 25 years of Erasure
After selling 25 million albums and achieving more than 30 single hits, Erasure returns with a work full of warm-hearted electropop and soul that oscillates between hedonism and heartache. For production, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell enlisted British electropop star Vincent "Frankmusik" Frank, a one-man band whose portfolio includes remixes and collaborations with Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding, and others. Currently, the man who was born in the year of Erasure's founding, 1985, resides in Los Angeles, where he also operates his studio.
Vince explains: “We chose Frank because he is someone who has a different approach to the music, who is sympathetic to synthesizers, and incredibly keen. He told me the music scene in London was just too small for him, so he made a conscious decision and moved to LA, with nothing! He just really likes that American pop thing – that whole Lady Gaga, full-on wall of sound.”
The combination of Erasure's timeless songwriting and Frank's opulent, heavily processed studio sound has led to a fruitful mix:
Andy and Vince explode like warheads on disco love missiles on tracks like “Be With You” and “Fill Us With Fire,” euphoric manifestos of love wrapped in shiny state-of-the-art electro-pop. But like all Erasure albums, “Tomorrow’s World,” celebrating their 25th anniversary, also contains a share of bittersweet introspection and world-wise melancholy.
The dreamy breakup anthem “What Will I Say When You’re Gone” is informed by contemporary dubstep in its staccato framework, while the lush post-mortem relationship eulogy “When I Start To (Break It All Down)” already sounds like a future stadium classic in the making. In “Just When I Thought It Was Ending,” Andy reveals his contemplative crooner side, while “You’ve Got To Save Me Right Now” unleashes a anthemic electro-gospel waltz.
Yet despite heartache and uncertainty, sunny euphoria and romantic optimism remain the predominant colors in the musical rainbow of Erasure on “Tomorrow’s World.” Even when the hedonistic fervor contains a desperate admixture – as in the doomed diva chronicle “A Whole Lotta Love Run Riot” or the nocturnal confession “When I Go Twisting” – Andy's operatic voice and Vince's soaring melodies are always chasing the stars. Accelerated by Frank's glittering production, these two tracks sound like colossal Ibiza trance-pop anthems for the long summer of the coming year.
In the four years since their last studio album “Light At The End of the World,” Erasure has been busy with countless other projects. Vince teamed up again with Alison Moyet to reactivate their legendary synth-soul duo Yazoo, further developed the studio in his home in Maine, and not least received the prestigious “Song Collection Award” at the Ivor Novello Awards in recognition of 30 years of his songwriting. Andy released the acclaimed solo album “Non-Stop” and lent his voice to the BBC TV show “Pop Star To Opera Star.” However, despite the long break, Erasure was not entirely absent during these years, as they released the retrospective Total Pop! – The First 40 Hits in 2009.
The songwriting chemistry is the key to Erasure's unbroken success for 25 years. Andy and Vince write their songs as they always have: together in the same room, face to face, waiting for inspiration – which fortunately always arrives.
“It is just spur of the moment, we can’t write separately,” explains Vince, “We are always in a studio with guitar and piano,” adds Andy: “It has got to be the actual physical thing of us being there and doing it. But the songwriting is always in flux. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s hard.”
“I think it’s getting harder,” says Vince, “but that’s probably because we’re a bit more picky. We tend to write more ideas than songs now. The way we used to work, we’d have one or two or three ideas, then piece them together into a song. Now we have five or six or seven ideas, so it gets more confusing. But there is still an incredible amount of satisfaction once you’ve finished a song.”
“When we’re together we are really together, but when we’re apart we don’t talk to each other,” says Vince. “I think that’s part of it. And also we are both pretty low key, neither of us gets particularly precious about ideas. We don’t argue about album titles or anything.”
“I just don’t see why there is any need for drama,” claims Andy, ironically one of the few truly dramatic frontmen in pop: “Vince and I are very similar people really. We are quite monkish, quite Zen about what we do. We definitely share a sense of humour, but I also think politics is important. We don’t talk about it that often, but we both know what’s fair and not fair, who’s a devil and who isn’t.”
And their gaze remains forward-looking: “In the 1980s and early 1990s, if you counted the number of purely electronic bands in the charts, there wasn’t that much really,” smiles Vince, “Now it’s like 90 percent! Who would have thought that? This whole new electronic scene is really exciting, and I don’t think anybody sounds like the music from back then, just because they are using synthesizers. Erasure have never been about nostalgia. We are not thinking about records we made in the 1980s, even if other people are. We are thinking about the next record - and future records.”
“Tomorrow’s World” is the sound of Erasure in 2011, rebooted, rejuvenated, and fully charged. They are not looking back. And isn’t that the essence of great pop: A timeless celebration of the here and now? Come and join the party.
