Rapper Savvy has produced a new album - an album that seeks answers to nearly unanswerable questions in fourteen acts. It is Savvy's fourth major project, titled "Pass auf dich auf," and feels like a mix of drama and action film, poetic cycle, and universally readable autobiography. It tells the story of a young man from Berlin-Friedrichshain who, although he is not yet thirty, has already "lived twice." Savvy's story is transferable: to you, to me, to an entire generation of struggling urban dwellers in their twenties, yes, even to today's Wasted Youth.
Savvy is an outstanding lyricist who - and this is certainly worth mentioning in 2024 - writes all his lyrics himself. Over the past few years, he has involved even more people in the creation process of his soundscapes. A total of five producers were involved in his fourth album: Momme Hitzemann, Nugat, Sterio, Falconi, and Young Lime - and this has noticeably benefited the album. Under the grand bell of "Pass auf dich auf," ominously echoing trap beats meet interstellar, pop-melodic synth pads; gentle piano strikes culminate with clock-ticking 808s, harmonious vocal arcs and children's choirs are navigated by three-dimensional basslines.
Those who listen to "Pass auf dich auf" chronologically may initially get the impression of dealing with a classic coming-of-age album. Youthful gang on the wrong path, muffled euphoria, reckless-naive bravado, supposed invincibility, nighttime Berlin. Between blue lights and puddles of spit, 245 graffiti and five-euro vodka, beginner sex and first jaw fractures, no one is thinking about tomorrow at this point. As the album's dramaturgy unfolds, the dream world-decaying cracks deepen steadily: young hearts begin to petrify, recklessness gives way to world-weariness, pressure rises, companions stray from their paths. "Pass auf dich auf" transforms from a coming-of-age album to an almost grown-man LP.
In 14 songs, we experience a journey through the youthful mind of Savvy, whose thoughts often relate not only to himself but also speak for his generation. As naive, carefree, and reckless as this album starts, it becomes deep and reflective towards the end. Essentially, growing up at album length. The latest single "Sterne holen" tells of this very life phase.
